One of my earliest memories of witnessing kindness is of seeing my dad driving down to the local grocery store and coming across an elderly man about a block away from the grocery store taking a pause to let go of about four to five grocery bags and resting. My dad pulled off to the side of the road and offered to drive him home. My dad didn't ask how far he lived or anything that may have been on other people's mind before considering helping. My dad simply saw this person who could use some help and he offered to help. I remember thinking how kind my dad was and I wanted to be just like him. Hello, and thank you for tuning in today to Dear Mommy. This party is just getting started, the place where you will find self care, peaceful and fun parenting and wellness resources at your fingertips. Let's dive into today's topic. Each and every morning and night, I tell my kids the same always look to the rainbow and don't forget to be kind. I say this because rainbows are God's promise of hope and eternal life, and I want my children to never lose hope, and being kind is something that I want to make sure they keep front and center, because I learned this from my parents both equally kind in different ways. I see this in my husband and his family as well, and I want my children to do the same.
Speaker 1:Today is World Kindness Day, and what a great topic to think about, and how it also provides benefits not only to others, but to our own selves and our mental health. So let's talk a little bit about kindness. First of all, kindness begins with a self. One has to be kind to the self and show self compassion. In a world where we are critical of others, and more so of ourselves, especially when we are surrounded by great one second glimpses of people's extraordinary lives, it is easy to compare our lives to what we see in social media. It is very easy to be unkind to ourselves in this type of comparison. So for one day today, hopefully, walk around and ban social media from your life, just for one day, and instead replace social media with expressing gratitude for the positive things and qualities about your own person, your accomplishments and everything that makes you unique in your own way. Showing this type of kindness towards your own self will also serve as a model to your children, and they will see what that looks like from the very person they form their first, kind actions from being able to be kind to yourself will help you to have more optimism and also improve your sense of self-worth and self-esteem. Now, in terms of expressing kindness, it is not always possible to pick up a random person off the street and give them a ride home. I understand that Moments like these don't tend to happen in bigger cities and can be a bit unsafe, from the time I experienced my father do it 40 years ago. However, it is so easy to perform small acts of kindness that go a long way, such as just offering a smile to a stranger at the grocery store, opening the door for someone on your way out of the pharmacy, allowing someone to go first at the checkout line. Sometimes sending a quick, just thinking of you note to a friend or family member will brighten someone's day so much you truly don't know when and how your actions affect people, both in negative and positive ways, so keep that in mind.
Speaker 1:I always use the example of people in healthcare. You often see the complaints. Because I worked in a hospital studying for 20 years, I see the kinds of acts that happen every day from every healthcare worker and not all of them get acknowledged. You often see the complaints arriving in the administration offices of patients that feel that they didn't receive good care. But guess what? You hardly ever see the gratitude notes that so many patients and family feel. Yet they are not written about because they just go about their life. They have nothing to complain about.
Speaker 1:These many moments go unseen, yet they make such an impact. Both my parents, including my brother, had surgeries during the time of the COVID pandemic when we could not visit. But having the doctors and nurses personally FaceTime me with updates, even when they were so busy, made these moments extra special and less worrisome. Talk about what kindness to keep the families in mind, knowing how stressful it could be to not be able to be in the hospital with their loved ones and it only took them making one phone call a day. All this kindness helps a person feel optimistic, hopeful and build lasting relationships with others. So today, go out and be kind, show your children what kindness is all about, and remember it always begins with showing yourself kindness.
